DIY Modern Plant Stand, Indoor or Outdoor

Wood working projects and inspiration

I have a friend who has a very “modern” home. The house itself follows the modern style and of course they try to stick with that theme when picking out furnishings and decorations. In one conversation I learned that they have several succulents and that he was wanting some sort of stand for the various pots they had. Because of this conversation, I decided to make him a prototype of my own DIY modern plant stand.

Designing a DIY modern plant stand – free plans

A quick search and you will see that the typical mid century modern style plant stand consists of 2 cross pieces held up by simple legs. The cross pieces that form the base of the plant stand are usually off center vertically on the legs.

Using some scrap poplar, I came up with a design and put together a prototype. I like the overall result, though I will be making a version with square legs as well.

If you like this design, you can download my detailed plans for free. These plans go into detail about the materials and measurements you will need to make your own version.

Adapt the DIY modern plant stand to your liking

If you can handle some simple math, there is no reason you couldn’t adapt this design to different heights and widths. In general, this design will work best with pots that have a wide, flat bottom or rest on a saucer.

While this particular plant stand is designed to be used indoors, as long as you chose appropriate materials and an exterior grade finish, there is no reason you couldn’t adapt it for outdoor use as well.

What you’ll need to build the modern plant stand

This project takes very few tools. It is best if you have a table saw and a drill press.

Outside of these two tools, you will also need two drill bits. A standard 1/4″ drill bit and a 3/4″ Forstner bit.
